The Minong Ridge Trail is a 29-mile route along the north shore of Isle Royale National Park. The trail is not only the park's most challenging hike but arguably the hardest backpacking trek in Michigan. Part of the challenge is the amount of time needed to hike it. The trail itself is a three to four-day walk from McCargoe Cove Campground to Windigo. But most backpackers also need another two days to reach McCargoe Cove from Rock Harbor. The second map in the Minong Ridge Trail series covers the 9.6-mile stretch from the junction with Hatchet Lake Trail to the south end of Lake Desor. From Todd Harbor to the North Lake DeSor Campground is a 12-mile-plus hike that includes the most challenging segment of the trail. For this reason, most backpackers take two days to hike it, spending the night at Little Todd Campground.
