Hadrian's Wall Path runs from the Solway Coast to Newcastle and is 135km (84 miles) in length. This map shows the entire route. For the greater part of its course, between the Tyne and Solway, the 84 mile footpath shadows the historic line of Hadrian's Wall. Its origins arose in the 1970's with the pressing need to address problems of overcrowding and erosion at a number of Wall sites. Built in the time of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, the purpose of the Wall was not simply to keep the barbarians out, but to control the movement of people across the border.
