Description:
Within the Bureau of Land Management’s Uncompahgre Field Office, Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area has a wide range of recreational opportunities, including the 20-mile long Sidewinder trail. Sidewinder is a multi-use trail open to dirt bikers, mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners, and horseback riders. It stretches north to south along the flanks of the Gunnison Gorge between the rim of the canyon and Peach Valley Road. It can be accessed from Delta County’s H 75 Road/Smith Mountain Road to the north and Eagle Valley trail to the south. Several primitive two-track roads, including Ute, Dinosaur, Duncan, Bobcat, and Wave roads, cross this trail, allowing riders to make loops or arrange pick up points. Nearby towns include Delta, Olathe, and Montrose. Summer day time temperatures can exceed 100 degrees. Bring plenty of water (at least one gallon per person per day) for you and your dog.
