In between the Verbano and Ossola districts, the Alps embrace a valley that is unique in its kind - the Val Grande - which, unusually for the area, was not shaped mostly by glacial action and consists largely of valleys carved by streams and inclines created by deposits of alluvial debris. The heart of the valley is situated around the initial section of the Rio Val Grande creek, where the vast wild area that makes up the Val Grande National Park begins. The Park is surrounded by the Ossola and Verbano valleys, with their villages, telling stories of hard work, of great determination, of men and goods travelling across Lake Maggiore to cross over the Italian border and into the European markets. All the villages around the Park have a story to tell and are interconnected with each other via numerous mule tracks, forming a network of trails that take hikers on a trip into the past, as well as on a tasting itinerary through the many local specialities and products. The mountain ridges surrounding the Val Grande offer breath-taking views onto the lakes below and the high summits of the Monte Rosa range and the Bernese Alps. At in La Piana, in the heart of the Val Grande, the steep mountain side grant protection from the noise rising from the valley below, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique silence and the feeling of being suspended in a different world. This portion of map is useful to plan itineraries that leave from Lake Maggiore and head towards the Ossola districts, through a wild landscape that regales visitors with unique sceneries, such as of the many alpine pastures and ruins of cableways, telling of a tough fight for survival, and the many memorial stones, standing as testimony to the tragic events of the partisan battle.
