North Mountain Bike Skills Area

This map shows the North Mountain Bike Skills Area near Darrington. Managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), North Mountain is a timber-generating working forest that provides opportunities for primarily mountain biking with some hiking. Led by the Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, DNR manages 1,100 miles of trails and 160-plus recreation sites in working forests and conservation areas statewide. Many recreation areas are located on state trust lands, which the agency manages to generate revenue for statewide public services, including public school construction, universities and emergency services. In addition to providing access for recreation, these lands also help protect against development, support clean air and water and maintain the highest environmental standards available. To learn more about recreation on DNR-managed lands, visit To access the North Mountain Bike Skills Area, park at the Whitehorse Trail parking area in Darrington. Head north on the Whitehorse Trail for about 3 miles, turn right on Powerline Road. After 0.5 miles, turn left onto the Whitehorse Connector Trail. When you visit a working forest, keep in mind that recreation sites and trails in DNR's working forests may experience temporary closures to enhance public safety during timber harvest activities.
