This map shows green dot roads, recreation sites and trails in the Ahtanum State Forest near Yakima. Managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Ahtanum State Forest is a timber-generating working forest that provides opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, motorcycle and ATV riding, hunting, wildlife viewing and camping. DNR manages the Green Dot Road system in partnership with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and private landowners to provide opportunities for dispersed recreation such as camping, hunting, off-road vehicle riding and wildlife viewing. Led by the Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, DNR manages 1,100 miles of trails and 160-plus recreation sites in working forests and conservation areas statewide. Many recreation areas are located on state trust lands, which the agency manages to generate revenue for statewide public services, including public school construction, universities and emergency services. In addition to providing access for recreation, these lands also help protect against development, support clean air and water and maintain the highest environmental standards available.
