Description:
High over Albuquerque, New Mexico, stands the Sandia Mountains. The Sandias are located in Cibola National Forest and the Sandia Mountain Wilderness. Starting at the trailhead near 7,000 feet on the western slopes of the mountain, one trail, La Luz, climbs steadily for 7.2 miles to the Sandia Crest at 10,678 feet. Along the way, the trail crosses improbable terrain - the hot lower slopes, boulderfields, canyons, and cliff bands. The Crest of the mountain is a developed area. A tramway and a road also climb to the summit. There is a snack bar, souvenir store, restrooms and plenty of viewpoints for the many tourists that have made the trip. The trail is excellently maintained by the Albuquerque Road Runners. The running club also sponsors a trail run on the La Luz Trail. The cloudhiking map includes waypoints and mileage on a custom topographic map. Happy La Luz Trails.
