This, fascinating, piece of history, dated 19 May, 1944, was produced, in the run up to D-Day, by the Allies, as they planned Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy. Locations of gun positions, batteries, pill boxes and a range of defences such as anti tank trenches and underwater obstacles were plotted from aerial reconnaissance, onto a standard map showing towns, roads and contours. On the night of 6 June 1944, more than 400 planes dropped the American paras of the 101st Airborne Division in Normandy. The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment landed on drop zone C, near Sainte-Marie-du-Mont. Stephen E. Ambrose & Steven Spielberg's "Band of Brothers" featured in Sainte Marie Du Mont. Touch History.
