Palmer Mountain and Split Rock

Palmer Mountain Recreation Area is a great place for hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, hunting, mounting biking, and fishing at Washburn Lake. Dispersed camping is also allowed. The autumn is especially picturesque when the many stands of aspen create a brilliant background. For those who want to "get away from it all," there are plenty of hiking options on a number of roads and trails that branch off the main Palmer Mountain Road. You are sure to find a favorite spot to enjoy the quiet, scenic views of the Okanogan hillsides, aspen groves and grasslands, and the peaceful waters of Washburn Lake. The Split Rock recreation site is located on the only public sandy beach on Palmer Lake, in northern Okanogan County. Although Palmer Lake is the second largest lake in Okanogan County, public access to it is limited. As a result, this small, day-use site is very popular for picnicking, swimming, beach activities and fishing. A concrete boat ramp offers access for boaters interested in fishing for small mouth bass, crappie, rainbow trout, and burbot, as well as for water skiing and other boating. Passing visitors also frequently stop for wildlife viewing. For more information contact: Spokane District Office 1103 N. Fancher Road Spokane, WA 99212 509-536-1200
