Mt Komayumi, (Komayumi-dake 1223m) in the heart of Nagano prefecture, can be easily reached from Tokyo via Shinkansen and bus. After a moderate climb past the exciting Hotoke-iwa, meaning Buddha rock, the narrow summit offers a bird’s-eye view of the area, including Mt Asama and the North Alps. After descending through a beautiful pine forest, a visit can be made to the nearby Daiho-ji, a 1400 year-old temple with a 3-storied pagoda.
