The Rafael Fire was discovered on June 18, 2021 on the Prescott National Forest, the result of passing predominantly dry thunderstorms. The fire was located in a remote area approximately 4 miles north of Perkinsville had grown to 1,000 acres by the morning of June 20. It ended up growing over 78,000 acres and burning substantial portions of the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness in the Kaibab and Coconino National Forests. The best potential burn morel habitat is located in the Ponderosa pine forests on the edges surrounding Sycamore Canyon Wilderness. High clearance vehicles are required to get to many of the plateaus above Sycamore Canyon Wilderness.
