The Oconnell fire was first reported on Monday, July 12th at 6 am that was started by a lightning strike approximately 5 miles northwest of Tusayan and 1 mile southwest of the Grand Canyon National Park. It burned approximately 190 acres in Ponderosa pine forest with sagebrush, pinyon, and juniper habitat. This area is likely marginal habitat for burn morels and most likely to produce with above average spring precipitation.
