Note that public land boundaries depicted in these pages are based upon various government data sources, and the criteria used to illustrate 20-acre parcels that contain land with public ownership are subject to dating and other fluid factors. While we have made every effort to reconcile and verify the accuracy of this data, there are inherent limitations to the scope of available information, and therefore we caution each user to verify access and/or restrictions with the local managing land agency as necessary to ensure that no trespassing laws are violated. It is incumbent upon each person to err on the side of caution when entering lands that are not obviously public. Federal, state and county lands that are open to the public depicted in this atlas are based upon information provided by various sources including government agencies and are subject to dating. While Michigan is blessed with a wealth of public land, portions of it may have restricted access and may occur adjacent to or partially within private land. Although national parks, state parks and county parks are composed almost entirely of public land, in some cases, private parcels also lie within those boundaries. State & national forests include significant tracts of private land. Roads designated as unimproved are derived from data from many sources including the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Forest Service and aerial imagery. Note that these roads can range from marginally passable “two-tracks,” which are very likely only accessible by foot, ATV or mountain bike — to hard-packed dirt or gravel roads that are likely navigable by most road vehicles. Some of the more primitive national forest roads have been decommissioned, which is the forest service’s designation for roads that are intended to revert to their prior natural state, and therefore may already include new forest growth. Plan carefully before traveling these roads, and respect private property, particularly where postings or gates exist. Although we have made every attempt to avoid inclusion of roads that are entirely private, it is nearly impossible to provide such substantial back-road detail without inadvertently including some stretches wholly owned by private parties. Private ownership and road development are fluid by nature, so conditions will inevitably change by the day.
