Hike 45: Kennedy Peak in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest

Description:

This circuit hike (8.7 miles, 2200' ascent) gradually ascends Massanutten Mountain towards a tower dating back to the 1920s, for sweeping 360-degree vistas, where hikers can view the Shenandoah River and the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 2014, PATC transported materials via helicopter and donkey to rebuild the Kennedy Peak Tower. Parking is available at the large lot off VA-675. Camp Roosevelt (north 0.5 miles from parking) was the first CCC camp in the entire nation. Find more information about the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/gwj/. The yellow highlight is used to illustrate the recommended route. Look for the trailhead for yellow-blazed Stephens Trail at the back of the parking area, and proceed left on the trail. Turn right onto orange-blazed Massanutten Trail when it also goes straight. Look for several vistas on the right. Continue straight to/from white-blazed Kennedy Peak Trail overlook and the Kennedy Peak Tower, rebuilt in 2014. Retrace steps to return to Massanutten Trail and turn left to continue to VA-675. Go right 100’ to re-enter the woods and return to parking. Through volunteer efforts, education and advocacy, the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) maintains and protects a section of the Appalachian Trail, in addition to the Tuscarora and other nearby trails and trail lands, in the Mid-Atlantic region for the enjoyment of present and future hikers. Visit www.patc.net to learn more about our mission and find volunteer opportunities. This map was originally published as part of a printed guidebook, comprised of 70 numbered hikes, crafted for the 2015 ATC Biennial Conference.
