Hike 44: Little Devil Stairs in Shenandoah National Park

Description:

This hike (7.6 miles, 2300' ascent) features challenging, steep rock steps with 10+ water crossings along serene, tumbling cascades in beautiful gorge. It boasts impressive cliff views in one of Shenandoah's most picturesque canyons. A moderate descent follows along a forest road with wildflowers and the well-tended Bolden family cemetery. Parking is available for 10+ cars at trailhead at end of Keyser Run Road (VA-614). The yellow highlight is used to illustrate the recommended route. Look for blue-blazed Devil Stairs Trail on the right as you enter the parking lot. Cross Keyser Run Fire Road (the clearing on the left is a good stopping place for lunch). Turn onto blue-blazed Pole Bridge Link Trail, passing Sugarloaf Trail on the right. Turn left at the junction, onto blue-blazed Piney Branch Upper Trail. Continue, passing Piney Ridge Trail on the right. Turn left onto yellow-blazed Hull School Trail. Continue right onto Keyser Run Fire Road to return to parking. Through volunteer efforts, education and advocacy, the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) maintains and protects a section of the Appalachian Trail, in addition to the Tuscarora and other nearby trails and trail lands, in the Mid-Atlantic region for the enjoyment of present and future hikers.
