Hike 12: Culler’s Overlook at Shenandoah River State Park

Description:

This short circuit hike (2.8 miles, 800' ascent) samples some of the many trails and ecological environments found at Shenandoah River State Park. Stop at the Visitor Center to see exhibits, then hike to Culler's Overlook, through a campground, along Bluebell Trail, a gentle climb up a wooded trail, then cross a ravine on a wooden bridge on the way back to the Visitor Center. This hike includes views of the Shenandoah River as it flows over rock ledges, both from Bluebell Trail along the river bank and from Hemlock and Overlook Trails looking down. After your hike, enjoy the 1,600-acre park along shoreline of the south fork of the Shenandoah River. Parking is available at Shenandoah River State Park at 350 Daughter of Stars Drive, Bentonville, VA 22610. (540) 622-6840. www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/shenandoah-river.shtml#general_information. The yellow highlight is used to illustrate the recommended route. Head right on the trail, while approaching the Visitor Center. Turn left at junction onto burgundy-blazed Overlook Trail when Hemlock Hollow Trail goes right; pass under Culler’s Overlook. Continue to/from Culler’s Overlook. Turn left onto purple-blazed Campground Trail. Go right onto Campers Loop Road through campsite; bear left at the third intersection onto the road with the “Do Not Enter” sign. Turn left onto light blue-blazed Bluebell Trail between campsites 27 & 28. Bear right to continue on Bluebell Trail at the “T” when the River Trail goes left. Turn right onto green-blazed Hemlock Hollow Trail, just before a parking lot, to return to the Visitor Center.
