La Gomera & El Hierro Tour & Trail Maps

Lacking detail

We've walked/hiked all over the world but never before in the Canaries, so bought both this map and the book of Gomera hikes to go with it. Sadly the map doesn't have enough detail for you to know exactly where you are, and GPS is poor or misleading because of the terrain. Trying to follow the trail descriptions in the book, together with downloaded waypoints on the map, we ended up off-route on each of the two short (sub 10k) walks we tried. Both were in great scenery, and we enjoyed them - but whereas the first was easily recoverable, the second left us on a goat track which disappeared on a steep overgrown rocky hillside. As older walkers in a new location we'd deliberately chosen routes which weren't too challenging, so weren't impressed. Reviewing where we'd gone off-piste later, we couldn't find the exact spot on this map - the path looked more or less a straight line. We then compared using All-Trails standard mapping, and could immediately identify various zigzags and dog-legs we'd experienced on the ground. This map may work OK for very clearly marked trails - some of the major point to point routes - but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone trying to follow less clear paths.
