This pleasant, fairly level hike (2.3 miles, 400' ascent) in Harpers Ferry features a great view of the Shenandoah River and Civil War sites, related to John Brown's Raid and the first meeting of Niagara movement - a pioneer in Civil Rights history. Parking is available at the Harpers Ferry National Historic Park Visitor Center at 171 Shoreline Dr, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425. Take a free shuttle into the town. Find more information at www.nps.gov/hafe/index.htm. The yellow highlight is used to illustrate the recommended route. From parking, cross Shoreline Drive, ascend the steps, turn left onto the trail. Proceed down the steps and cross the bridge. The Murphy Farm sign begins a counterclockwise loop along an unpaved road. Proceed left to and from the Murphy-Chambers House and continue on trail. Take a left to and from cannons and continue on trail, passing the first Earthworks trail. Take a right at the second junction and proceed straight to Earthworks. Retrace steps to continue on trail. Continue to River Vista. Continue to John Brown Fort foundation. Go to and from the Struggle to the Heights sign. At the end of the loop, retrace steps back to parking.
