Many miles of wooded trails traverse the 837-acre “Old” Town Forest located a few miles east of Hinesburg village center. Thanks to the efforts of the Hinesburg Scout Troop and extensive work by the mountain-biking group, Fellowship of the Wheel, these forest trails offer something for everyone including hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and biking. Horseback riding and ATV use are permitted ONLY on certain trails (indicated in red on the April 2013 trail map). An intricate network of bike/ped trails offers the mountain-biker different levels of difficulty from beginner to advanced. The Eagle’s Trail makes a 3.7-mile loop (including the Class IV section of Hayden Hill Road) around the Forest, connecting the three trailhead parking areas. Hunting is permitted and popular in the Old Town Forest. Plan and dress accordingly. Be alert for logging and other forest management activities. Because the area is remote and the trails are very circuitous, use of a trail map and compass is highly recommended.
