Lakeshore Trail in Holly Recreation Area is true to its name. It skirts the shorelines of Valley and Wildwood Lakes and remains on the edge of the water, well below the park road that follows ridges above. For the most part, it’s a scenic route along the wooded banks of these impoundments and not through family reunions and company picnics. In midweek in spring and fall hikers will have the trail and much of the park to themselves. Lakeshore is a 2.5-mile loop from its trailhead near the spillway that separates Heron Lake and Wildwood Lake. You can also begin at the Overlook Picnic Area for a 3-mile hike that begins with a descent to lower lake levels. Or from the Heron Lake Beach, where on the east end of the day-use area the Beach Trail follows the east arm of the lake for 0.4 miles before popping out of the woods across the park road from the trailhead. This would be a 3.3-mile hike that would end by backtracking the Beach Trail. This map, produced by MichiganTrailMaps.com, includes: --10-foot contour lines --Location of all trailheads --Amenities icons for benches, picnic areas, restrooms and trail posts --Mileage flags marking a 2.5-mile hike along the main loop Along with photos, you can get a mile-by-mile description of the trail from MichiganTrailMaps.com at https://www.michigantrailmaps.com/member-detail/holly-recreation-area-lakeshore-trail/
