The Black & White Glade maintains several special attributes in the heart of western Maine’s ski country. First, the project is Maine’s first public human-powered glade, which is exciting in and of itself! Second, the zone is a unique eight-mile point-to-point twomountain traverse connecting two communities including Bethel, ME on the west end and Rumford, ME on the east end. And third, it is GBA’s first project in partnership with a ski resort, implementing the “backcountry gate” into the B&W glades. The B&W Glade is primarily within the Rumford Whitecap Mountain Preserve, which is a 1100-acre undeveloped and treeless tract on Rumford Whitecap Mountain (elevation 2,214 feet), owned by local land conservation group Mahoosuc Land Trust. Full of features including snowfields, drops, 360 degree views and more, the zone incorporates a new strategic element by partnering with Black Mountain of Maine (BMOM) as the anchor of the east end. BMOM contributed to the project an uphill only skintrack to access the glades through a “backcountry gate”, as well as amenities providing for complementary skiing options for BMOM skiers. Please note that BMOM has an uphill policy that you must abide by if you start at the BMOM lodge.
